At least 100 workers, the majority of them women, have fallen ill after breathing in a chemical substance that was used to fumigate a tobacco plant in the Dominican Republic.

The workers were taken to hospital for nausea, vomiting, head pain and body spasm.

The Dominican Republic Institute of Social Security told EFE they had all since been discharged.

The incident follows a similar case of intoxication when 40 tobacco workers fell ill after presenting similar symptoms of poisoning.
