“They kill journalist Karla Turcios,” La Prensa Grafica posted on Twitter. The newspaper said the body of 33-year-old Turcios was discovered on a road outside the town of Santa Rosa Guachipilin, 100 kilometer northwest of San Salvador.

A source from the Attorney General’s Office told AFP that the body of a woman was found on Saturday, but remained unnamed due to lack of identification. Santa Ana police officer, Hugo Bonilla, said Turcios’ husband, Mario Huezo, identified the body of the journalist.

“He identified the clothes that Karla wore,” the newspaper reported. “We sympathize with your family in these hard times,” La Prensa Grafica posted to social media, along with a picture of Turcios.

Though the results of an autopsy have yet to confirm the cause of Turcios’ death, a source at the Prosecutor’s Office told AFP that the journalist appeared to have died from strangulation and an investigation has been launched.

El Salvador President Salvador Sanchez Ceren condemned the killing of Turcios, saying “I have ordered our security authorities to carry out an urgent and effective investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible.”
