The last time we had an Avengers crossover event with Fortnite for Infinity War, it brought us an in-game Thanos, but no permanent Marvel character skins. But with Fortnite’s Avenger: Endgame event, things have changed.
Players will load up the game today to find the first official, seemingly permanent licensed skin in the store, other than the generic “NFL team” ones. That would be Marvel’s Black Widow, a key figure in a half dozen Marvel movies now, played by Scarlett Johansson, and slated for her own solo feature in the next few years.
The Fortnite Widow skin is not really the Johansson version of the character from Endgame. She’s back to her traditional red hair and has a widow logo plastered on her chest and back bling, not a version of her we’ve ever seen in the MCU, and I doubt this is a costume she ends up getting in Endgame. (Update: Actually she has a selectable style where you can make her blonde) But this is not a knock-off version of the character either, it’s actually Black Widow, and this marks a pretty important turning point for Fortnite, opening the door to really any potential licensed skins in the future. That could be mean more Marvel ones (there is one more coming besides Black Widow for this event) or say, Star Wars ones when Episode IX gets here. And that’s just Disney. Future partnerships could bring any amount of licensed characters to the game.
The Black Widow skin is its own rarity, simply called “Marvel,” and costs 1,500 V-bucks, or around $15 or so. Her pickaxe, a giant stun staff, costs 800 V-bucks, and she has a spin-kick emote for 200 V-bucks. It’s not clear who the other skin will be, but I would assume a guy, as that’s usually how Fortnite works. Given that we have Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Hawkeye weapons as part of the LTM, I assume it won’t be any of them. I also would guess it won’t be a character that is currently dead after the snap (“dead,” at least), so that leaves…Ant Man? War Machine? Bruce Banner with progression into Hulk the more kills you get in a match? Not sure.
We don’t know if Black Widow is a skin that’s going to come back around often, but probably not, given that it’s a specific tie-in to this event. So if you want it, your best bet is probably to snap it up now. I’m guessing that Epic might not be wild about doing licensed skins all that often, given that they have to split the revenue with the rights holders, no doubt, instead of taking it all for themselves, but in this case, it might sell so well that it offsets that. I’m not quite clear on why if Epic is selling two Avengers skins, why they wouldn’t just go nuts and sell like seven or eight with all the main cast members, but perhaps there are hidden limits to this deal for some reason to prevent that.
Anyway, Black Widow here is going to be a must-buy for me, and for a few million other players I’m guessing as well, even if her price is a little steep. And now we can run around using her to hold Captain America’s shield and Thor’s hammer-axe in the LTM, so that’s fun.
