How To Get Yourself A Shiny Meganium

I’ve lost track of how many Pokémon GO Community Days we’re up to now, but they remain one of the most compelling events in the game, and today’s should be no different. Starting today at 2 PM ET, we have our Chikorita Community Day which spans three hours, and will be full of non-stop spawns of the grass type.

We are now shifting into Gen 2 starters for Community Day, something we always knew was coming, but we had to finish the Charmander, Bulbasaur, Squirtle rotation first. First up here is Chikorita, with Totodile and Cyndaquil to follow in the next few months, no doubt.

As ever, there are three hour lures active during the event, 3x catch XP which is great for an event with non-stop catching, and if you evolve your Chikorita day, it will learn the unique move Frenzy Plant, which is a solid grass type move. Also don’t forget that Mewtwo is now in the wild in normal Tier 5 raids, so while you’re out catching Chikorita this afternoon, you might run into him as well. Take advantage, because there are always a zillion people out playing during Community Day, and I guarantee that most Mewtwo raids will also be packed during this time, maximizing your chance at getting him.

Obviously the big prize of the day, however, is trying to land yourself a shiny Chikorita, and as a result a shiny Bayleef and Meganium as well. The color alteration on shiny Meganium is actually pretty noticeable, unlike say, shiny Blastoise, and it’s somewhat similar to what we saw with shiny Venusaur a while back. Its body goes from green to yellow, its flower from dark pink to orange. It’s definitely something that stands out, and a worthy addition to your shiny collection.

The best way to get a shiny Meganium by the time the day ends is to farm, farm, farm. As ever, the odds of getting a shiny on Community Day hover around 3-5%, meaning 1 in every 20 or 1 in every 35 or so catches should get you a shiny Chikorita, if you have any amount of luck. You may do better than that, and if so, remember to evolve your highest IV one at the end of the session, but I’ve seen people go 0 for 100 in the past, so there’s no real way to guarantee one. I am seeing some reports that the shiny rate may have been increase for Chikorita, with some people catching 8-15, so perhaps Niantic is being a bit more generous this time around.

You can increase your odds by hanging out in areas where those three hour lures are running, and by having incense going on you at all times. Both lures and incense will indeed have increased spawn rates of Community Day Pokémon as well, so there’s no reason at all not to have them going at all times during this three hour block. If there was ever at time to use them, it’s now.

A 4% spawn rate isn’t amazing, but if you farm non-stop for the three hour block, hopefully you will land at least one, and can get this Gen 2 shiny evolution line for your collection. After today, all three of these shinies will be permanently added to the game, though you will be far less likely to run into them when Chikorita are no longer spawning everywhere.

Happy hunting, I hope you’re able to land a shiny or two before the day is done.
