The 2019 NBA Draft Lottery is tonight, an event in which a collection of ping-pong balls and how they bounce could forever alter the course of the league’s history. At stake is the No. 1 overall pick and with it the right to draft Zion Williamson, the Duke freshman phenom who is considered by most to be the top NBA prospect in years. There’s plenty of other players to get excited about, but everyone will be tuning in to ESPN at 8:30 p.m. ET tonight to see which flailing franchise might get the chance to turn things around by selecting a consensus superstar in June’s draft. While the New York Knicks had the worst record in the league during the 2018-19 NBA season, you might be surprised to find out that the organization doesn’t have all that great of a shot to win the lottery.

With the 2019 NBA Draft Lottery comes the debut of the league’s latest format to determine how the first 14 picks of the draft shake out. Instead of giving the team that had the lowest winning percentage during the regular season the most combinations to unlock the top pick during the drawing, the NBA is instead now equalizing the bottom three and giving each of those franchises—the Knicks, Cavaliers and Suns this year—a 14% chance to win. In years past, the top seed in the lottery had a 25% chance of winning, the second had a 19.9% chance and the third a 15.6% chance. This also means there is more opportunity for clubs to move up from their projected draft slot, with a more gradual reduction in odds than the traditional sharp fall off. The Chicago Bulls, who are the fourth seed in the lottery, still have a 12.5% chance to win, although the bottom three seeds—the Hornets, Heat and Kings—have just a 1% shot at securing the top pick.

Fans looking to get a piece of the 2019 NBA Draft Lottery can find some action at most sportsbooks. Shops are offering odds for each team that is involved in tonight’s drawing to earn the top pick, with New York, Cleveland and Phoenix obviously the favorites at +600. The Hornets, Heat and Kings would pay the most if they defy the odds and win, as a $1 bet on one of these organizations getting the No. 1 selection would net a whopping $97.50. You can also wager on if certain lottery franchises will secure a top-four pick, although the odds are much shorter. To return $1 on a top-four selection for New York, Cleveland or Phoenix, one would need to risk $1.13. Even the longest shots in the lottery will pay just $19.90 for each $1 risked if they shoot up the board and land within the first four picks.
