Britain and the European Union could may be very close to signing a Brexit “divorce deal.”
According to a report from The Telegraph. The EU expects Theresa May to formally agree to a Brexit deal on Friday.
The British Prime Minister is apparently close to finalising a new deal, and is seeking approval from the Northern Irish DUP and Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar.
May came close to a deal on Monday, but it fell apart at the last minute over the Irish border. The British government needs to reach a deal with the EU on issues including the Irish border, the “divorce bill,” and EU citizens’ rights before it can move onto the next stage of Brexit negotiations, and the European Union has set a deadline of Sunday night to reach one.
“We are making progress but we are not yet fully there,” a spokesperson for European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker told The Financial Times. “Talks are continuing throughout the night.”
European Council president Donald Tusk is due to make a statement early on Friday morning – in which he could announce a deal.
