The 2019 NBA All-Star Game will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina tonight, showcasing 26 of the league’s biggest stars in an exciting exhibition match. For the second straight year, the NBA elected to buck the traditional East vs. West format and instead build out the rosters based on a captain’s draft. LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who had garnered the most All-Star votes in their respective conferences, were chosen to lead up the two squads, alternating picks from a pool of starters selected by the fans and reserves that were picked by the coaches. For the first time ever, the draft was televised live, which added an extra layer of intrigue to the event.

Now that the draft is in the rear-view, oddsmakers clearly believe that LeBron wound up with a better collection of talent. The Los Angeles Lakers star’s group opened as a 6.5-point favorite to win tonight, which isn’t surprising given the sheer amount of veteran stars up and down the lineup. James’ starting five features three reigning MVPs in Finals MVP Kevin Durant—LeBron’s first overall selection in back-to-back All-Star drafts— league MVP James Harden and All-Star MVP in himself, plus all-world talent Kawhi Leonard and Kyrie Irving in the other two spots. That’s a tough group to stop, although Giannis’ crew will surely put up a fight. Aside from the Milwaukee Bucks superstar, the team boasts Joel Embiid, Paul George, Steph Curry and Kemba Walker in its starting five and was built to be a more defensive-minded unit.

Those looking to check out the rest of the rosters, as well as odds for each of these players to become the contest’s Most Valuable Player have found the right spot. Charlotte Hornets guard Kemba Walker spoke about what it means to have the All-Star Game in his franchise’s home city:

It’s amazing. I’m happy everyone is here. I’m really happy to be home. Welcome everybody into this city. Everybody’s getting a chance to see it. I’m getting a lot of good feedback about the city. That’s what I like to hear. A lot of guys telling me, “This is my first time in Charlotte. I didn’t know how cool it was.” So I’m really excited to hear that.

Dallas Mavericks veteran Dirk Nowitzki admitted he won’t be much help defensively for Giannis’ team, but thinks he can make an impact on offense:

I can’t help much on the defensive end. I’m glad [Antetokounmpo] drafted a defensive team. Hopefully, I can make a three or two. We’ll go from there. Obviously, I’m not going to play that much. This is more about the players that were voted here. I’m just here to enjoy, and I’m very appreciative of the opportunity to be on that stage again.

Lakers future Hall of Famer LeBron James was asked about his feelings on the squad he chose to compete in the All-Star Game:

There’s a sense of pride every time you’re competing, and like you said, I got the opportunity to hand-select my team. There is a sense of pride. I know we all saw the way the game was last year, and we’re going to try to top it. Hopefully, it can come down to the wire, like it did last year, but we’ll see. We’ll see what happens.

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo discussed what it means to be a captain in the All-Star Game along with LeBron:

It’s crazy. Before I came into the league, I was looking up to [LeBron]. Right now I was in the locker room, and I was sharing a meal with Team Giannis. Like I’m leading the All-Star team. You know, picking teams with LeBron James. If you told me that six years ago, I would never, never, never thought I would be in this position right now.

Steph Curry, two-time league MVP from the Golden State Warriors, talked about what it’s like to compete in an All-Star Game hosted in the area where he was raised:

It means a lot. It’s kind of overwhelming, to be honest. From the time I got here Thursday morning to now, I’m just kind of trying to get as much in as I can. Got to be like the Energizer Bunny, fight this fatigue, and just have as many experiences as I can and see some familiar faces, some familiar sights. I’ve played countless games in this building growing up, high school, AAU-type stuff. It’s pretty awesome to be back here representing Charlotte the way I know how.
