Saab said that the temporary suspension of former Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz was due to her questionable actions, such as denying her participation in the selection of judges of the Supreme Court in 2015.

He reiterated that his appointment as attorney general Saturday was due to the suspension of Ortega from her position, as she is investigated over accusations of "grave breaches of the law."

Ortega is accused of lying about the alleged "lack of legitimacy of origin" of 33 judges of the Judiciary, to whom she gave the go-ahead in 2015. She is also being investigated for her alleged support for ongoing opposition protests, which have since claimed over 100 lives. She has been suspended from her duties until a verdict is reached.

"The violations committed by Ortega will have a legal outcome, as they caused damage to democratic institutions and jeopardized citizen peace," Saab said.

The attorney general was accompanied by new Ombudsman Alfredo Ruiz and Comptroller General Manuel Galindo during the press conference.

For his part and regarding the press conference of the attorney general, the Constituent member Diosdado Cabello said that the dismissal of the Ortega is totally in line with Venezuelan law.
