Venezuela: President Maduro Receives Palestine President Abbas

The president of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas met Monday with his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro at the Miraflores Palace, seat of the government of the South American nation as part of the first leg of his Latin American tour this week in which he will also visit Cuba and Chile.

Speaking to the media after their meeting, President Maduro said he “rejected the decision of the United States government to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.”

He added: “Palestine is the most beautiful cause of unity. We love this nation and we hope that sooner or later talks will resume so that they can recover their territory.”

Maduro stressed that more needs to be done in support of Palestine and its people in the face of Israeli and U.S. aggression. “There is more to be done for the Palestinian people and much more needs to be done to stop the human crime that has been committed against Palestine.”

The venezuelan president also said he will be appointing a top-level executive secretary between Venezuela and Palestine to strengthen a large economic, financial and commercial relations.

Abbas was received by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza Sunday night in Caracas. The visit will last two days and aims to evaluate the strengthening of the relations that Venezuela and Palestine have maintained since 2009.

Both countries maintain cooperation agreements in the areas of education, economy, trade, energy, agriculture, culture, tourism, communication, sports, defense, security and health.
